How is the Prognosis?

Children with blood tyrosine levels under control are indistinguishable from their peers. They are likely to act the same way and look like all other healthy children of the same age. The only difference between children with tyrosinemia and their peers is the nutritional restrictions for those with tyrosinemia and the drugs they need to take regularly.
SCREENING IS CRUCIAL
Diagnosis by screening at an early stage may prevent health problems in infants with prompt treatment.
Heel lance blood samples, collected and dried shortly after birth, are used for newborn screening.
A positive result in screening indicates that further testing is necessary to understand whether the infant has tyrosinemia. A positive result alone does not mean that the newborn has tyrosinemia.
