Dietary Treatment

In the treatment of tyrosinemia, a special diet therapy is applied to maintain blood tyrosine levels within the normal range. This approach restricts the dietary intake of phenylalanine and tyrosine.
Protein-rich food contain phenylalanine and tyrosine, therefore food with high protein content should be avoided in treatment. Because protein is an essential nutrient for growth and development, the protein requirement necessary for normal growth and development should be met using special phenylalanine-free and tyrosine-free amino acid mixtures that contain all necessary vitamins and minerals.
Since phenylalanine and tyrosine are necessary for the body, the diet program should include bread, pasta, rice, vegetables and fruits at the amount recommended by the dietician.
Since these foods are limited in the diet plan, special food with low protein content should be used to meet the energy requirement.
Raising awareness of friends and relatives under the supervision of parents and teachers is imperative to ensure compliance to the diet.
